Mouse and rat infestations are common everywhere, and more in rural areas where homeowners share their property with all forms of wildlife. When you get mice and rats in your home, it's easy to set up a couple of traps and forget about it, but is that really going to work? A lot of times the traps aren't very effective, especially rat traps, and the rodent's live happily in and around the home. Luckily for you, there are a few tricks for boosting the effectiveness of your mouse and rat traps that help you think like a rodent and take away the luxury of their environment. A rodent has two main jobs: to set up a living quarters in a dark, secluded place, and to find a plentiful source of food. A home usually offers them both.

Keeping a rodent from moving in can at time prove to be impossible. Your house is full of dark little corners where rats and mice can duck in and out, and unless you have a cat on staff, keeping a rat or mouse out that wants in is a daunting task. Sealing up the home on the outside and within is definitely highly recommended, but it won't always do the trick of keeping them out. Luckily for you, the second thing is something that you do have control over, namely the rodent's source of food. Rats, mice, and other rodents are very adept at finding food. Things that may not seem like they're food for rats and mice can often be things they look forward to each night as tasty treats to feast upon. Getting rid of as much of their normal food source and ability to find shelter is the best way to ensure that your rat trap looks as enticing as possible, giving the rodent no choice but to try it. Mouse and rat traps can very often prove ineffective due to the fact that the rodent's have already found an ample food supply somewhere else and don't need to go exploring for others. They might have found a more than ample supply of food from a source that you haven't even really thought of yet.

Dog food is probably the most common source of food that rats, mice, or other home pests are able to feast on during the night watches while everyone, including Fido, is asleep. Many homeowners never even think to clean out the food, crumbs, and residue of food from their dog's food dish each nice, taking away the scent and opportunity of food they've come to expect. And because dogs are almost always asleep at night, rodents and pests can pretty much go where they please within the home. Cats, however, are very adept hunters, almost always active at night searching for prey that happens to be walking by. But leaving food in your dog's dish each night with a rat or a mouse in the home can be a pretty sure way of giving your rodent a tasty feast each night that, once they get used to, won't be very willing to let go of. The rat might be only leaving his nest to make a straight run for the dog bowl once a night. The rat might not ever even wander past the trap you've set for him. If you get rid of as many of the rodent's luxuries as you can, the effectiveness of the traps you set should rise in response. Then they will need to explore for different food sources, and at that point will more than likely be enticed strongly by your traps.
